SSD
Tips |
|
|
How many GB do I
need? |
|
We recommends SSD with
minimum 60GB capacity for business/office users, 120GB SSD
for general consumers and professional users, 240GB or 480GB
SSD for laptop that is used as main or only computer. |

Defragmentation of
SSD? |
Solid-Sate Drive
is different then regular Hard Drive, it's NOT required
for defragmentation. SSD has seek time around 0.1ms
only, while the fastest Hard disk nowadays has seek time
at least 7 to 10ms.
Defragmentation will reduce
lifespan for SSD. Frequently defrag SSD will damage it's
NAND flashs.

How to estimate SSD
lifespan? |
- Both SLC and MLC theoretically
have unlimited reading lifespan, but writing
lifespan is limited.
- SLC NAND flash has about 10,000-30,000
write cycles.
- MLC NAND flash has about 1500-3,000
write cycles.
- More empty space can increase
lifespan of SSD, and make SSD performs more
efficiently.
- e.g. If your SSD is MLC and has
20GB empty space, you may write 3000 cycles x 20GB
(60TB) until the SSD's NAND flashs fail.

|
SLC or MLC? |
SLC main advantage
over MLC is the writing lifespan and writing performance. You
should consider SLC based SSD if:
- You have 1GB
RAM or less, because your computer will use HDD/SSD
as virtual memory (or swap file), therefore write performance and lifespan
is more important.
- You do a lot
of video/audio editing, or BT downloading.
- Generally,
SLC has approximately 10 time lifespan of MLC.
